  • Feng Shui Tip: Get a Head Start on Spring Cleaning

organizing-your-closetThis spring is all about vitality, and one of the best ways to free up new energy is by clearing clutter and organizing your space.

Remember, this spring of the Wood Horse year is a good time to set new habits. Choose a simple project and dig in.

Here are some ideas to get you started. The results will be much bigger than you anticipate!

    Organize Your Closets

If you need inspiration, check out these articles (with great photographs) by my friend Sara Eizen of Nest. Sara is a gifted designer and organizer. One of her specialties is work with families.

    Releasing Your Stuff

As you organize it’s important to release the stuff as you go, or you just end up with new clutter piles. The following resource page from my friend Allison Nelson of The Space Shaman tells you where to take your stuff. Allison is a professional organizer who will help you bring order to all parts of your life.

Get a start on spring cleaning now and you’ll be creating momentum for the entire year to come.

  • Three Secrets to Success in 2014

year of the horse 4Every season holds unique opportunities. By understanding the “flavor” of the current cycle, you can live more intentionally in the flow.

The beginning of the Wood Horse year is characterized by youthful exuberance and unrestricted energy. It’s an undisciplined, unfocused, pure flow of life force. Think wild pony or rambunctious child.

In keeping with the practical nature of the horse, the guidance for success this spring is practical as well. There’s a need to focus and harness the vitality, without becoming distracted or drained. Think training a pony, or offering appropriate limits to a 3-year-old.

Here are three key secrets to success this spring. (And a fourth “bonus” secret.)

Secret #1: Practice the Zen of Daily Life

The Horse Year is all about practical details and the dignity of work. You’ll most easily find the Divine this year by being in your body and attending to the simple practices of daily life. Think “Chop Wood. Carry Water.” Embrace your work. Embrace the care of your home. This is a path to joy and one of the best ways you can participate in the limitless possibilities of the spring.

    Secret #2: Embrace Something New

Another way to access the chi of the year is to find “Beginner’s Mind.” Education is a key theme for the year, as it is a prime way to harness and “train” the unlimited creativity that is available. When you focus your energies on learning something new, you access vitality in a special way. Indeed, brain research shows the importance of new learning for maintaining vitality throughout our lives.

This is the perfect year to practice “new thinking.” Take on a creative project. Enroll in a course of study. It doesn’t need to be practical. Your focus will lead to new growth in all of your life. The creative focus of studying something new will help you return to beginner’s mind and see the world in new ways every day.

Secret #3: Nurture Your Physical Vitality

This year, especially the spring, is all about youthful energy. The more you can nurture your physical body the more you’ll be able to “keep up” this year. (Have you spent time with a 3-year-old lately?!) Habits of good food, sleep, and exercise are a priority for the year if you want to be fully available to all of the opportunities.

Another key aspect to the year, if you haven’t already discovered it, is that it will be easier this year to set healthy habits. If you found it hard to follow-through last year, take heart. The Horse energy responds to training, and that translates to support for your own practices of good health. The habits you anchor this year will serve you moving forward.

The Bonus Secret: Showing Up to What “Is”

This principle of “showing up” can be summed up in the word Reciprocity. Reciprocity is a way of living that embraces all of life’s circumstances. There is no “good” or “bad.” No “heaven” or “hell.” No victim thinking. There is only the present moment and your capacity to respond. When you live fully in the moment you are truly on the “leading edge” of creation. From this place your potential is limitless.

    In Conclusion

To sum up the secrets to success, this year’s practices are all about embodiment.

The last two years have washed away the past and taken us deep, in preparation for what is being born. It’s as if we have emerged from the last two years into a brand new world. It’s very young and fresh and hasn’t yet come to form. This year we will begin to discover what is still waiting beneath the surface.

I invite you to embrace the adventure of the year. Reconnect with your inner three-year-old, the “pony” within. Set up play dates. Explore your ordinary life with the eyes of a young child and you’ll find magic in every moment.

  • Lessons from the Super Bowl – Claiming the Shadow and Finding Your Lust for Life

Seattle-SeahawksThere’s a parade in Seattle today. It’s expected to be the largest gathering in the history of the city.  We’re a little bit excited about our football team and today we welcome them home.

Did you see the Super Bowl? What unfolded Sunday on the world stage was a mythic story of courage, passion, and the power of redemption. This was alchemy, pure and simple. A group of young men who were suddenly larger than life, fueled by their shared vision and the pure strength and vitality of what they created together, surprised and astounded us all.

For me the story of this football team embodies the very potentials that are at work in the world today, and speaks of what is possible for us all.

The unprecedented success of this winning team lies in a culture based on values to which we can all aspire:  Authenticity, Optimism, Trust, Respect, Courage, Passion, Appreciation, Forgiveness, and the Belief in the “Impossible.”

Most importantly these values come from the top down. What has happened here starts with inspired leadership. Leadership that begins with forgiveness, the power of redemption, and calls forth the brilliance in those who have been rejected or overlooked in the world.

Today I invite you to consider the ways in which you can claim these values of inspired leadership for yourself.

Among the many stories of Pete Carroll’s leadership style, what sticks with me is the image of him making his ultimate decisions about players by “looking them in the eye.” He trusts a person’s passion and grit, rather than their past mistakes, and by doing so he releases their story.

Are you ready to access your own inspired leadership? Can you release your limiting stories of the past? Can you “look yourself in the eye?” Will you recognize your own true brilliance? Can you let go of mistakes and love every bit of yourself?

When you are able to own and embrace the totality of who you are, you call all the fragmented parts of yourself home.

Embracing all those parts of yourself that you’ve rejected or denied is what we call “claiming the shadow.” This the power of redemption that Pete Carroll’s leadership is demonstrating.

What results from this kind of forgiveness is vitality and joy and the willingness to give it your all. When you claim and celebrate the totality of who you are, that is when you find the strength that lies within. In this way you discover your true essence.

2014, the Year of the Horse, is a year of courage, passion, vision, and strength. Whether or not you are captured by the story of this young team of upstarts, you can take heart from their success and realize that you, too, can have a transformative experience this year.

It’s not a stretch to say that what happened for the Seahawks can happen for you, too. You can face circumstances directly and, with the force of your determination and vision, you can transform your life.

    Nothing is impossible.

Welcome all the stranded parts of yourself home.  Forgive your mistakes. Release your old stories of limitation and regret. There are infinite reserves of strength and vitality waiting beneath the surface.

Take heart from the myth we have all just witnessed and claim that potential for yourself.

Be your own Coach Carroll. See the truth of your light in those fragmented parts of yourself and welcome them home.

Postscript: Finding Your “Team” – The Alchemy Mastery Program

The kind of success we’re talking about rarely happens in isolation. True transformation is most possible within a community of support.

If you’re looking to make deep and lasting changes in your life, I invite you to join the Alchemy Mastery Program, which begins March 1. This 9-month experience offers you the opportunity to learn new tools and receive personal guidance within the context of your own life circumstances. There are still a few spaces available. Please contact me to set up a time to talk about your year and how the Alchemy Program can make your own dreams come true.

  • Riding the Horse – What’s Your Word for 2014?

There’s a force of creative change in the air. Can you feel it? At the end of this week, with Thursday’s New Moon, we say goodbye to the Water Snake and cross the threshold into the Year of the Wood Horse.

There could hardly be two more contrasting “tides of chi” than what we experienced in the 2013 Snake Year and what is coming now in 2014 with the Horse.

Imagine the difference of being in the deepest depths of the ocean with a giant mysterious sea serpent and now, suddenly, rising up from the depths to step onto a wild stallion, ready to charge across the plain.

This will be a year to charge forward in your life.

Each year I choose a word that describes my intentions and focus for the year. My word for 2013 was “Balance.” I embraced the deep and internal energy of the Water Snake year to support my own journey within. As I danced with the circumstances in my life, I returned to this touchstone of “Balance” again and again. The teachings unfolded.

This year I’m feeling the eagerness of the Horse. I’m ready to charge forward and manifest in the world. My word for 2014 is “Vitality.” I’m eager to take the deep roots and internal strength of last year and come out to the light of day through creative activity in the world. I intend to nurture my vitality so that I’m ready for the adventures ahead.

What’s your word for 2014? What practices, habits, and positive mindset will support you? The next few days are the perfect time to take stock and reflect on the gifts of the last two years, and your visions for moving forward.  Feel your own eagerness for what’s coming.

You don’t have to know exactly what will happen. Just enjoy the feeling of creativity and potential that’s surrounding you. Your word will emerge. Your Self already knows.

Thursday’s New Moon is opening the door to the New Year. I invite you to take some time to celebrate your life.

Here are Some Ideas to Get You Started

    • Set aside some time for reflection and creative play
    • Feel the eagerness of what is coming
    • Choose a contemplative activity: take a walk, make a cup of tea, grab your journal, consult your Tarot cards
    • Draw, paint, dance, sing
    • Use a journal template – I love Susan Conway’s “Unraveling the Year Ahead.” The first half covers your reflections on the previous year, the second half is for visioning your future.

Want more inspiration? Check out this week’s New Moon Tarot. There’s some practical and positive guidance for entering the Year of the Horse. To receive Tarot readings in your inbox update your subscription here.

There are so many blessings awaiting you this year. The Wood Horse loves new activity and creative challenge. In the coming months you will have ample opportunities for both.
